2009 Beef Season
COWABUNGA!! - WOW! It's not over until it's over as this one on Saturday, July 11th, against the Billings Outlaws came down to the last second! The Beef trailed Billings 0-7 at the end of the first quarter, 23-28 at halftime and down 13 points with 13 minutes left to play in the game. It wasn't until late in the 4th quarter when the Beef finally pulled ahead 48-45 after an OJ Simpson TD. Billings returned the kickoff to the Beef 6 yard line, then fumbled on the next play giving the Beefense a huge turnover with 27 seconds left in the game. After Billings used all their timeouts, the Slaughter House watched in slow motion as a McNear pass on 4th down was nearly intercepted for a touchdown with 1 second left in the game. Lucky for the Beef, RJ was there to defend it and, as Billings was lining up for a field goal to tie, the refs called the game due to a Billings injury with no timeouts left in the last 90 seconds of the game. One thousand one....game over! We Congratulate Hafford for winning the Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell, Rita for earning the Mad Cow Fan of the Year Award, the Beef for giving Billings their only 2 losses of the year and to Maverick and all the Prime Dancers & RumpRoasters for an outstanding half-time tribute to Michael Jackson. We also welcomed back Team Sprowls & our injured fans, Thomas (TJ), Doc and Cheryl! What a GREAT NIGHT!
UNBELIEVABLE! - bumps, bruises, a head injury, a dislocated elbow and a broken finger....no those weren't our player injuries Saturday, June 27th, in Sioux City....those were our Fan injuries! Our sincere wishes go out to Thomas (TJ), Cheryl and Doc for full & timely recoveries. Speaking of recoveries, that's exactly what the Beefense did as they forced 4 Sioux City turnovers in a 58-43 win over the Sioux City Bandits. It was an exciting game which included 2 onside kicks as Sioux City pulled within 8 points with 39 seconds left in the game. We Congratulate The Beef on their 10th win of the season and HT3 for earning the Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell. We thank everyone who joined us on the Meat Wagons, SkyLark Meats and everyone who brought goodies to the tailgate party. We also thank the Harleys who escorted our Meat Wagon Fan Buses to Sioux City - they were awesome & we look forward to seeing them at the next game!
BEEF STAMPEDE - San Angelo, Texas at The Slaughter House on Saturday, June 20th, as The Beef held on to win 62-54. It was a little slice of paybacks as the Stampede Express QB Sonny Cumbie was the Texas Tech QB who hung 70 points on the Huskers in Lubbock in 2004. The Beefense came up big intercepting him 3 times, including a key interception by Brent Hafford with under 2 minutes to play after San Angelo recovered an onside kick. Beef Kicker Zac Gradoville kicked a 20 yard field goal with 51 seconds left in the game to put the Beef up by 8 and secure the win.
It was an exciting game & we congratulate the Beef on improving to 9-3 and to OJ Simpson for earning the Horny Harry Player of The Game Bell. We also thank owner Robert Sprowls for being here with us.
HICKORY DICKORY DOCK.... - Holy Cow, it was an adventure watching the creative officiating at the game Friday, June 5th, as The Beef captured the Sioux City Bandits at the Slaughter House in front of 3,549 fans. So when is an incomplete pass (rather lateral or not) called a re-do leading to a 1st down instead of a 4th down? Since when does a team get 4 timeouts in a half? How do you do a running play for good yardage and take no time off the clock? Since when does the down marker go backwards because they weren't keeping track? In spite of all this & more, The Beef were able to hang on to a 31-25 win over the Bandits. It started slow with the Bandits showing up late for the game and The Beef offense not earning a 1st down until the 2nd quarter, but it errupted into a wild finish as the Bandits tied the game at 25-25 in the 4th quarter before James McNear ran into the endzone to put the Beef up 31-25. While Offense struggled at times, the Beefense stepped up with key turnover recoveries and the huge 4th down sack with 24 seconds left in the game by Chris Bradford, earning him the Horny Harry Fan Player of the Game Bell. Congratulations to Chris & The Beef as the win pushes their record to 8-2 on the season. Big thanks to Team Sprowls for being here with us & at the Post-Game Party!
0.4 SECONDS.... - was all the time The Beef needed to stage a come from behind victory over the Colorado Ice on Saturday, May 2nd, in front of 3,034 fans in Loveland, including The Meatheads. Colorado threw for 3 touchdowns in the first quarter but fortunately, 2 of them were to the Beefense as the Beef were up at half time 41-30. It was an exciting game with 19 touchdowns and 8 lead changes in the 2nd half. The Ice were up 68-64 with just seconds left in the game but The Beef were not about to give up. After an incomplete pass, it came down to 0.4 seconds left in the game and 1 more shot. Beef QB James McNear evaded the Colorado defense and threw a touchdown pass to RJ in the endzone to win 70-68!! Holy Cow!! Congratulations Beef and RJ for earning the Horny Harris Player of Game Bell for his 4 touchdowns including the show stopper. We also enjoyed visiting with Clint Brown!
BEEF TAME THE ROUGHNECKS - on Friday, April 24th, at the Slaughter House in front of 2,936 fans. It was fun, it was fast, it was Beef Football on top 70-58 over Odessa, Texas. After giving up 40 points in the first 2 quarters and trailing 36-40 at halftime, the Beefense dug in and held Odessa to 18 points in the 2nd half. For the 2nd week in a row, Cortney Grixby returned a missed field goal for a touchdown, this one 50 yards, and a 57 yard kick off return for a touchdown, earning him the Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell. Potsy also earned a Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell as the only player to play all 10 years with The Beef!! Congratulations to both and to The Beef for a great game! The win improves the Beef to 4-2. We also welcomed our new General Manager Russ Francis, former Patriots & San Franciso 49ers NFL star, to The Beef!
BEEF CORRAL THE OUTLAWS - on Saturday, April 18th, at the Slaughter House in front of 3,521 fans. It was a total team effort as the Beef Offense jumped out to a 14-0 lead, Cortney Grixby returned a missed field goal 44 yards for a touchdown and the Beefense came up big with key interceptions and held Billings to 6 points in the 4th quarter. The Beef handed Billings their first lost of the season by winning it 48-33. The Outlaws play undefeated Sioux Falls in Billings next. Congratulations to OJ for earning the Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell and to the entire Beef organization for a GREAT WIN! The Beef improve to 3-2.
SHOOT OUT in ABILENE TEXAS - Holy Cow, you didn't want to be late for this one...2 plays and the score was 7-7 and the action continued until the last possession of the game when the Beef secured the on side kick! It was fun, it was fast and the Abilene fans & people were awesome! The Beef fell behind 20-10 within the first 10 minutes but came stampeding back to take a 31-20 lead at halftime. It was a total team effort as backup Beef QB Chad Schmigel started the first game of his Beef career racking up 230 yards and 0 interceptions (earning him the Horny Harry Player of the Game Bell); RJ broke the all time Beef rushing record (earning him stitches), OJ celebrated his first Beef game with 11 catches for 129 yards and our Mad Jello Scientists celebrated their 35th Wedding Anniversary! The Offensive line gave up 0 sacks and the Beefense sacked Ruff Rider QB Quincy Carter 3 times as the Beef went on to win 52-46 in front of 4,632 fans, including Tonga's crazy & fun Horse Family, The Meatheads and Beef Staff. It was a fun trip - big thanks to Scott, our American Airlines Steward, for his personal serenade of "Abilene, the Prettiest Town I've Ever Seen", to Henry and his RoadRunner Taxi Service (325-232-3295) who did such a great job helping to keep track of us and a special thanks to Barney of the Ruff Riders for his incredible hospitality! Abilene drops to 1-1 and the Beef improve to 2-2. This Week's Riddle: How many Meatheads does it take to run a Coke machine?
Congratulations Beef ~ Great Game!
BAD GUYS WIN - in Billings, Saturday, April 4th, as the Beef battled the Outlaws tough, even leading a couple times, but came up short 52-40 in front of a crowd of 3,309. The Beef scored first on a field goal and lead again 10-6 before falling behind 20-10 at halftime. Billings QB Chris Dixon had 2 interceptions before completing his first pass but the Billings Defense out-sacked the Beefense 4-0. The Beef came within 2 points 39-37 in the 4th quarter but couldn't hold them as Billings went on to win and improve their record to 3-0 and in first place in the Pacific Division. The Beef dropped to 1-2 and 3rd place in the Central Division behind Sioux Falls and Bloomington.
STORM PREVAIL - in a hard fought battle back and forth in Sioux Falls on Sunday, March 29th, as the Storm extended their home field winning streak to 32 games. The Beef fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but never gave up as they kept coming back and coming back, closing within 8 points during the game, before losing 67-49. Thanks to all the Beef Fans who made the trip on the Meat Wagon and to Justin Thyme for the box lunches. Congratulations to RJ who was awarded the Harry Harris Player of The Game Bell for returning a kickoff for a touchdown, running in a touchdown after the ball bounced off McNear's helmet and scoring a touchdown that 1 of the Refs took away. This game had a little bit of everything, including a riddle: What's it called when a kick hits a ceiling beam before ever getting to the goal posts? Answer: A Sioux Falls Field Goal! The Storm improve to 3-0 as the Beef drop to 1-1.
BEEF WIN - the first game of our 10th Anniversary Season in the new Indoor Football League (IFL) on Friday, March 20th, against the Wichita Wild. After a moment of silence in honor of our forever Meathead Friend, Horny Harry, the action began before 4,222 fans at the Slaughter House. In a close back & forth game that came down to the last minute, the Beefense secured a 41-36 victory for the Beef at the Slaughter House by holding Wichita to just 81 yards in the 2nd half. It was an exciting game with alittle bit of everything, including 3 blocked kicks (courtesy of Tonga), an onside kick, fumbles, interceptions, penalties and a 1-0 passing stat for our Kicker Ricky. The 2nd annual "Can Opener" also yielded 1,731 lbs of canned goods for the Open Door Mission. Congratulations to The Beef and to Tonga, who received the Harry Harris Player of The Game Bell and was named the IFL Special Teams Player of the Week!!
