MEATHEADS ADOPT...
scary isn't it....

Dwarf Zebu
(looks like it rolled in the Pet Area...)
In keeping with the Omaha Beef & Community Spirit, The Meatheads have adopted a Dwaft Zebu at The Henry Doorly Zoo since 2006 and are listed on the Adopt an Animal Donor Board in the Wild Kingdom Pavillion.
This is one lucky Zebu...not every animal has Meatheads as Zoo Parents!
So what is a Zebu?
- Dwarf Zebus were bred from the sacred cattle of India
- The word "zebu" is derived from the Tibetan word "ceba", meaning hump
- A Dwarf Zebu is usually gray, but can be red-brown, black or a pale fawn color. The light color helps keep them cool in hot climates. They have horns spaced far apart on the top of their head (sounds like someone else we know) and they have a hump of muscle above the shoulders and a large flap of skin under the neck called a dewlap
- A Dwarf Zebu gives birth to a single calf (although twins occur occasionally) after a gestation period of 290 days
- A Dwarf Zebu eats grass, hay & grain and grazes approximately 8 hours a day in the wild
- Dwarf Zebus live in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Caucasus, East Africa and in a barn & pasture near Dairy World at the Henry Doorly Zoo
Proof that we're not just full of bull:
